Crushers last game at the JBM tonight
Tonight is the closing of a chapter in the history of the Weeks Hockey Organization as the Pictou County Weeks Crushers play their final game in the John Brother MacDonald Stadium.
Moving to Pictou County in 2004, the Halifax Team Pepsi squad was rebranded the Crushers and settled into their new home in New Glasgow.
Mike Barbour, a New Glasgow native and former Weeks Major Midget player, graduated from the major midget level just in time to move to the junior A level and join the Crushers in their first season in Pictou County. Barbour said it definitely wasn't what it is today, but that those first few years made for a lot of great memories.
"I think for someone like myself that had been around New Glasgow my whole life that I knew this would be a high level of hockey coming to the area and that everyone would want to play for them," said Barbour. "Back then we knew the Weeks organization was looking to give junior A hockey a chance and now they're one of the most sought after places to play in the league, which is great to see as a hometown player."
Ryan Fortune from Halifax, played with the team from 20082011 and was captain in his final season. He confirmed Barbour's thoughts on how the organization grew into one players looked at.
"It was a just a first class organization and because I was obviously moving away I wanted to go somewhere I would feel comfortable," said Fortune. "I felt comfortable right away from Wade Taylor to Troy Ryan helping me get adjusted. Everyone just made it easy to adjust. I had a lot of buddies around the league telling me what they were going through with other organizations and I never had to experience any of those negative things with the Crushers."
Looking back at their time with the Crushers both players said there were a number of memories, some off the ice and some on that stood out amongst the rest.
"When we first started out it took a lot of volunteers to get this team going and the community really stepped up," said Barbour. "That was the tell tale sign that this team was going to be successful here and that we were really coming together. I also think back to when we used to volunteer at the YMCA and at events throughout the county and every one of them was special."
Fortune remembers volunteering as well, but said that it was also the general buzz around the community that really stands out to him from his time with the team.
"Moving from Halifax I will always remember how close knit the community was and how everyone talked to us throughout the community, asking how we were doing and fitting in," he said. "Everyone genuinely cared about us and how we were doing both on and off the ice. It is still incredible how close knit the community was and is and how much community support there was. We obviously did what we could as well and when you saw kids out in the community it was just special to be a part of."
"On the ice, I can remember around playoff time in my final two years that we sold out the two series in 2010 and were pretty close if not sold out in 2011, which was amazing to be a part of."
Both players were asked about arenas they had played in throughout their hockey careers, with both saying that the John Brother MacDonald Stadium will always be a stand out in their memory. Fortune believes the move to the Pictou County Wellness Centre will be a big, but positive change for the team.
"When I played in Windsor we played in 'the barn' in the downtown core of the city, which was cool because it had a lot of history to it," said Barbour. "It didn't have that local feel to it though. I was also lucky to play in cool rinks throughout my time in Windsor, but playing as a junior A player in your hometown is something you can never beat. The atmosphere is a big variable when you play the game and being in front of 1,000 people packed into a rink is something we always enjoyed about being in the John Brother Rink."
The John Brother MacDonald Stadium is something Fortune referred to as "the junior A rink."
